Obiettivi formativi

In particolare, l'insegnamento prevede:

The course develops the basic concepts of the theory of differentiable curves and surfaces, introducing the Gaussian curvature and the geometry of  surfaces  in the space. Part of the course will be devoted to differential forms, integration on surfaces and Stokes' theorem. All these arguments will be used in subsequent studies in Geometry, Mathematical Analysis and Mathematical Physics

The theoretical structure of the course consists in a series of theorems and their proofs, the study of which will enable the student to autonomously produce rigorous proofs of mathematical results not identical to those already known but inspired to them in a relevant manner and to solve problems of moderate difficulty in the field of differential geometry and multivariate calculus.

In particular, the course will provide:

  • theoretical training objectives: development of a rigorous mathematical language; assimilation of abstract concepts, theorems and their proofs related to differential geometry and multivariate calculus
  • applied training objectives: the student will learn computing techniques to solve problems; the student will be able to solve standard exercises and new problems, in which it will be necessary to develop new strategies and apply the concepts learned or develop simple proofs similar to those seen in class.

1. PRENOTAZIONI

The exams in June/July/September 2020 and January/February 2021 will be conducted in the following way. This will be valid both for online exams  or in person exams.

  • the exam is an ORAL EXAM
  • on the Moodle website, you can find an exercise sheet with about 20 exercises
  • the current file on Moodle is the one that will be used for the exams in June/Juny/September 2020. There will be a different one to be used for the exams in January/February 2021
  • one of the questions at the oral exams will be one of these exercises. There will be more questions about the theory part of the course
  • you do not have to turn in a solution for all the exercises
  • collaborative work in solving the exercises is allowed
  • during the oral exam you cannot use any material to assist you in answering the question about the exercises
Foreign students can choose to take the exam in Italian, English, or French.

PROCEDURES FOR THE ONLINE EXAM

1. REGISTRATION

In June and July 2020 the exam will online, using Webex. To assist in organizing the exams, registrations will close one week before the exam:

  • exam of Tuesday, June 16: registrations close on Tuesday, June 9
  • exam of Thursday, July 9: registrations close on Thursday, July 2

The detailed schedule for the exam will be prepared as soon as registrations are closed. The exam will start on the scheduled day and will continue in the following days.

To avoid network problems, there will be small sessions of about 2 hours, with 3/4 students in each.

The schedule will be available on Moodle and it will be possible to ask for a swap with another student. Two students asking for a swap must BOTH send a mail to Prof. Alberto Albano, stating the name of the person with whom to swap. The deadlines for swaps are:
  • exam of Tuesday, June 16: swaps before Sunday, June 14
  • exam of Thursday, July 9: swaps before Tuesday, July 7
It is possible to ask for a multi-person swap: EVERYONE involved must send a mail, detailing the complete proposed swap.   Right after the deadline expiration, the final schedule will be published and no other modifications will be made. We remind all student to register ONLY IF they are sure they will take the exam, to avoid complications in the organization.   With the final schedule, all students registered for the exam will receive the link to connect to for the exam. Every exam sessione has a different link.   NOTICE: if you want to listen to the exams in another session, you must send me an email with the request. Normally the request is granted, as long as the number of partecipants is not too big (below 30). You will also receive the link to connect to. If you are just listening, you must deactivate your webcam and microphone.

2. WEBEX SESSION

To take the exam you need an Internet connection with a device that has a webcam and a microphone. Computers, tablets or cell phones are OK. The webcam must show your face during the exam. You can use white paper sheets to write on, in order to help you answer the questions. If requested, you must show these sheets using the webcam, to check what you have written.

As the exam is public (by law), all partecipants must stay connected for all the duration (2 hours) and listen to the other students' exams.

The grade will be given at the end of the oral exam, as always. It will show on "libretto online" at the end of all exams.

NOTICE: if you have connection problems during the exam, the exam will resume as soon as they are resolved. If it takes too much time to solve the connection problem or if there are too many of them, the exam will be rescheduled at a later time.
